An opportunity has arisen for an experienced firmware engineer to work at the Cochlear Technology Centre (CTC), based in Mechelen, to develop innovative implant design solutions, to solve challenging technical problems and to foster technology development globally as Senior Firmware & Automation Engineer.

The scope of the role will include:
Developing and maintaining Cochlear’s unified verification (UniVer) framework within Platforms and Technologies. This test framework is used in the design and development phase of technology platform components for external and/or implantable hearing applications.

Develops new firmware components (e.g. hardware abstraction layer libraries and drivers for custom ASICs, firmware prototypes, etc.) for technology platforms, while keeping a broad view on the complete system.

Key Responsibilities:

Cochlear’s Unified Verification Framework – Software/Python toolboxes
Translate user needs and requirements into development activities
Develop, prototype and verify new software toolbox modules
Document software toolbox modules
Communicate with different stakeholders to discuss the planning of the tools.

Verification Methodologies, Tools and Technology
Champion verification best practices in the team
Champion verification automation and design for test methodologies
Continuously aim to improve Cochlear’s Unified Verification Framework
Provide training and reference/guidance material

Firmware architecture and design
Translate stakeholder needs to firmware component requirements.
Propose firmware architecture to fit firmware component requirements.
Propose planning for the firmware component together with team.
Implement firmware code and verification scripts including documentation.

Quality
Document & report developments and progress clearly
Follow all applicable development processes and methodologies. These may be part of internal policies, applicable international standards, applicable regulatory requirements and/or specific team processes
Collaborate and influence across multiple teams to ensure good quality delivery of the activities

Team & Communication
Contribute to team effort to commit to the project schedule
Communicate openly and effectively within the team facilitating an efficient team environment
Communicate openly and effectively towards external parties
Generate patent disclosures from development work

Key Requirements:
University degree or equivalent in software or embedded firmware engineering with a minimum of 4 years of experience.
Good knowledge of Object-Oriented software development and working experience with C++ and Python
Strong understanding of test automation and automation techniques
Proven experience in programming microcontrollers in C.
Strong interest in medical device development or safety-critical applications and associated regulations.
Ability to have a broad perspective on technical development
Excellent communication skills (English)

Ideal
Experience with data analysis and statistics
Experience with medical device, standards and processes
Familiar with Agile development environments and scrum
